Oh yeah, I need to keep posting.....

4/22/2020

As usual my plans to constantly update the blog have been foiled by the twin enemies of productivity - procrastination and distraction. Much to my chagrin I have realized I am no better at focusing than most of our teen members, and perhaps I am even worse since they all seem to be capable of multi-tasking to a degree that I only vaguely comprehend. #oldguyproblems

Here are my thoughts for the day in no specific order of importance:
  • Working from home for extended periods of time is a weird experience. I really miss being at the Teen Center and seeing our members and staff in person.
  • Showering and putting on actual pants when working from home should be counted in your favor during annual employee evaluations.
  • Job satisfaction when working from home is directly proportional to the number of really big computer monitors on your desk.
  • Cats are not the most supportive co-workers, and they often steal you seat when you go to get snacks.
  • Zoom meetings are not as satisfying as in person meetings, but often feel more productive. The big things that is missing are the all important conversations in hallways or parking lot that occur after meetings and are often the place that best ideas come from.
  • I should spend less time reading about all of the challenges we are facing and spend more time connecting with folks, or reading for fun/playing video games/going for walks.
  • Playing D&D online with friends has been a great social outlet during this time. I m blessed to be a part of several groups that have taken their in person games online during the social distancing.
  • How will we work social distancing at the Teen Center when we re-open? How do you create distance in a space that is designed to get people working together and hanging out?

We are living in strange times and will likely be doing so in one manner or another for the next 12-18 months. As the situations dictate physical separation from each other, the building of connection through other means becomes even more important. We can come out of all of this stronger for the experience, but that does not mean it won't be challenging in the meantime.

Take care,
George

I am the Director of the Los Alamos Teen Center. The teens keep me around because they are supposed to practice being nice to old folks.
